Herniated Disc

Herniated discs and pinched nerves can be a debilitating, chronic situations that you don’t have to suffer. Surprisingly, most bulging discs are not symptomatic. A disc is herniated when its soft center pushes through a small crack in the disc’s exterior, irritating the surrounding nerves. Some people experience no painful symptoms, but others may experience arm or leg pain or back pain, depending on the location. Often the patient will experience tingling numbness, or weakness in the affected area.

“I was literally a train wreck of pain and miss-alignment on my first visit and was incredibly relieved & realigned after just a few sessions! I have seen chiropractors on & off for 25+ years and know that he is seriously the “REAL DEAL” of holistic health care! I refuse to see another chiropractor and drive from Hamilton every week to Florence (Initially 2X’s per week) Passing up 10 other practices in route. He is intuitive and really listens; he is willing to treat everything that is sore in one visit. He cares and truly wants to help you. Thank God for him!”

“Dr. Marston is the best chiropractor I have ever gone to and I’ve been seeing chiropractors for over 30 years. I was going to a young chiropractor in Missoula. Right away he messed my hips up and left me in severe pain. He tried for six months to put my hips back in the right position for my body (I had one short leg) but he couldn’t get my hips adjusted right. I then came to Dr. Marston and he fixed my hips in one visit. He is professional and someone that I admire very much. Thank you Dr. Marston for making my quality of life so much better for myself and my husband.”

“I have had constant back pain for 20+ years. Have had many chiropractic adjustments for some relief. Always have taken Motrin for pain relief daily. After a month of twice weekly treatments with Dr. Marston, I’m standing straighter, have more flexibility, less pain and off the Motrin. Feels great to feel good again!

John P 6/9/17

“When I cam to Dr. Marston, I could not raise my left arm. I had already used Physical Therapy for 12 weeks to no avail. After just a few weeks of chiropractic care, he had found the problem and fixed it. The ultrasound was wonderful and healed the area fast.”

Victoria W 2/1/16

“As someone with scoliosis and ongoing structural issues. I have been to a lot of chiropractors over the past 30 years. Dr. Marston is the only one who has taken the time to truly learn what works best for my particular challenges and has adjusted his approach to address my changing structural needs. I know that no matter what symptoms I present with, new or familiar, he will take the time and attention to detail to make sure I walk out of the office feeling better. It’s invaluable to me to have a chiropractor in whom I can place so much confidence and trust.

Heather M

“My first visit to Doctor Marston was to try to get help with my pain [in] the back and hip area. With X-rays and follow-up, the doctor came up with a treatment plan. After a couple of visits I could already notice some big changes and pain relief. I think he can help get me healed and pain free.”

Pam C 8/7/15

“I first came to Dr. Marston in so much pain I couldn’t even stand up straight. We found out what the problem was together and he explained everything, each step of the way. I felt confident going into treatment and started looking forward to my appointments. Now 3 months later, I am virtually pain free. Dr. Marston has not only helped my initial pain, but has also helped in other areas I didn’t even know needed help! Thank you, Dr. Marston, for EVERYTHING!”

What is the Difference Between Herniated Disc and Slipped Discs?

Except for the first 2 vertebrae in the neck , there is an intervertebral disc between each vertebra of the spine. You can imagine the discs as shock absorbers, cushion and the providers of flexibility for your spine. Sometimes cracks can occur in the outer layer of the disc, and the softer material inside of the disc can push out. They do not generally “slip”, although it is a popular terminology these days. More accurate diagnosis would include bulging, ruptured, or herniated discs.

Causes of Herniated Discs

  • Car Accidents
  • Poor Posture
  • Poor Diet
  • Sneezing or Coughing
  • Sports Injury or Heavy Lifting
  • Aging
  • Pelvis Misalignment
  • Dehydration
  • General Wear and Tear
  • Overactive Reflexes

Symptoms of Herniated Discs

  • Pain or tingling in arm, back foot, or leg
  • Numbness in legs, arms or hand
  • Muscle Weakness
  • Muscle Spasms
  • Hypersensitivity

Non-Invasive Treatment

A chiropractor will take a thorough medical history, and do a physical exam, especially focusing on orthopedic and neurological test if there is suspicion of a herniated disc. Are all of your reflexes intact? Is there any loss of sensation or numbness anywhere? X-rays or MRIs may be necessary and decisions about your best path to health will be made. If there are serious problems like cauda equina syndrome or advanced loss of sensation, reflexes or unusual neurological findings, then a spine surgeon referral will be given. We will be looking out for you and finding answers. If however, it is a disc injury, most of these injuries can be treated by chiropractic care. We have multiple options, however, our most go to in these cases are spinal manipulation and our Flexion Decompression method.

The gentle distractive forces of this decompression therapy create a decompression of the spine with unloading due to distraction and proper positioning, to improve blood flow and nutrient exchange to the injured area. Therapy sessions typically last 15 minutes, 3 times a week for up to 1 month, transitioning from passive to active treatments as you respond, with most patients feeling pain relief with as few as 4-8 treatments. Most patients are released from treatment after 8 weeks. Treatment plans may very due to each patients needs.

With the right treatments, reduction of inflammation and allowing the body to heal itself, these serious injuries can be solved without surgery. All patients will have a custom solution in accordance to their medical history and we take great pride in finding the core issue and finding long term solutions.
